Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to order my wedding gown?

Although there is no set time to order your dress, most brides start to look about 12-8 months before their wedding. Our dresses take on average 20 weeks to arrive, although on occasion we can arrange for a rush order to be produced – please be aware that designers do charge for this service. Don’t forget you will also need to allow time for your alterations, approximately 6 weeks. We also have a range of off the peg dresses available for those brides with less time. To ensure the whole process is as stress free as possible, we would advise you time your dress to arrive about 3 months before your wedding date. This ensures your dress arrives in good time for you to choose your accessories, underwear and shoes before your alterations start.

Do I need an appointment?

At Darcy we want you to have fun and enjoy the process of choosing your gown. Making a personal appointment with us will ensure we have plenty of time together to discuss your needs and to guide you through the different styles of gowns available. We will try to accommodate walk-ins wherever possible but appointments are always given preference. Appointments are not required for our occasion wear boutique but of course our consultants are on hand to help you with styles, colours and accessories, should you wish assistance with your selection.

How do I prepare for the appointment?

It is easy to get overwhelmed by the process so we recommend you bring one or two people whose opinion you really trust. The more people you bring the more confusing it can become as opinions and tastes differ.

All our brides are important to us and we want them to experience our gowns in the best condition possible we therefore request that you do not wear false tan for your appointment and please keep make-up minimal. This also enables us to see the different colours of the gowns against your natural skin tone and will this help your final decision.

Come with an open mind, don’t be frightened to try on different shapes and styles and most importantly, have fun!

Can I take photographs?

We are sorry but we do not allow photography in store.

How do I pay for the gown?

When you choose your gown, you are required to pay a 50% deposit. The balance is due when the gown arrives in store. Payment can be made by credit or debit card, cheque or cash. We accept all major types of credit and debit cards.

Do you offer a payment plan?

At Darcy we can offer an interest free payment plan for Bridal and Occasion wear. This can allow you to pay for your gown or outfit by instalments if you wish. We will tailor make a plan suitable for your needs, making it an easy affordable way to pay for your goods.

Do you offer an alteration service?

Yes we offer a full alteration service for Bridal and Occasion wear. You’ll be in safe hands with our experienced seamstress and fittings are carried out in our boutique. We advise starting the fitting process approximately 6 weeks before your special occasion. Please contact us to book in on 0191 2301000.

Do you store gowns and is there any charge for this service?

When your dress arrives we will contact you to come in for a ‘dress trial’. This enables you to try on your actual dress and begin the process of choosing your accessories, shoes and underwear. We will then store your dress until the fittings start and then again when your fittings are finished until you are ready to collect your dress, usually a day or two before your wedding. There is a small charge for this service.

How do I transport my gown?

As your wedding approaches we understand the demands on your time so we will liaise with you on the best time for you to collect your gown. Your gown will be steamed and pressed ready for collection and she will come in her own Darcy gown bag. We do not charge for this service. We recommend that on the day of collection you complete any last minute errands before you collect your dress. This will ensure the gown is in the bag the least amount of time.

If you are getting married abroad, we recommend a case or specialist box the size of your hand luggage allowance to ensure you keep your gown with you at all times. If you wish we can pack your dress for you. Your gown will be carefully folded and wrapped in acid free tissue paper for safe travel. We do not charge for this service. On your return if you are having a second function back home we will steam/press your dress again at no extra charge.

What do I do with my gown after the big day?

Having your dress cleaned and storing it correctly can help preserve your dress over time. We offer a dry cleaning and boxing service for our brides. We recommend you bring your dress back to us as soon as possible after your wedding to ensure the best possible result. Your gown will be carefully wrapped in layers of acid free tissue paper and packed in an acid free box specifically designed for bridal gowns.
